PREVOST GAVE HIM DISCIPLINE.

MANSFIELD GAVE HIM STREET SMARTS.

Violent Content’s childhood was shaped by two very different Detroit environments. On Prevost, his grandmother’s house was strict, structured, and rooted in Christian discipline: no cable television (because cable TV had cussing in it), early bedtimes, home-cooked meals, and order.

With his father in prison, weekends often took him to Mansfield, where he spent time with his father’s side of the family. Mansfield was different. There was no curfew. None. He was around older voices and adult conversations about conspiracy theories, the dope game, how to deal with women, and life principles he thought he was too young to hear.

From about eight to fourteen, those two worlds shaped him. Prevost gave him discipline. Mansfield gave him street smarts. Looking back, he sees those years as part of God developing his discernment and giving him a deeper understanding of the Word and the world around him.

THE BLACK TAPE RECORDER - 1997

The setup was simple: an upstairs family flat on Mansfield with little furniture, a small black radio, and a cassette deck with a record button. That radio became Violent Content’s first studio.

A mentor showed him an old cassette trick. By putting tissue in the top of a tape, he could record over it, even if it was a professional cassette.

He started with tapes from his cousin Danny, known as the Black Man Review, who also taught Kid Rock how to play guitar. Over those tapes, Violent Content recorded early raps, drummed beats on tables, and made songs with his cousin and little brother.

The recordings were rough, but they had structure: songs, skits, jokes, and storylines inspired by the rap albums he studied as a kid.

Later, his friend introduced him to a Dr. Groove 202 drum machine. They plugged it into the television with RCA cables, placed the radio near the speaker, balanced the beat against his voice, and pressed record.

At only 11 years old, VC was already receiving an education that extended far beyond music. An older mentor taught him how artists could build something of their own.

He explained how to establish a business as an LLC, register music with ASCAP to collect royalties, and understand the importance of contracts. These were unusually advanced conversations for a child, but they planted the foundation for the company VC would eventually build.

The education continued during car rides, where freestyling became both practice and proof of his ability. People noticed that VC could reach beyond the vocabulary expected of someone his age, weaving four-, five-, and six-syllable words into his rhymes.
